5 dogs: 5 Sit/Stays. No Leashes, No Photoshop . . . all you need is Herdabout K-9 Academy Obedience!

Obedience Classes

We believe the principles of behaviour modification are the keys to training dogs, using positive reinforcement and gentle corrections to establish a method of communication with your dog. We use both operant and classical conditioning to establish wanted behaviors.

Punishment NEVER works!  Obedience classes teach you how to be a good pack leader while training your dog for compliance, as well as correcting and replacing unwanted behaviours.

All classes and lessons are Trainer / Facilitator Courses, meaning:

WE TRAIN YOU TO TRAIN YOUR DOG

IMPORTANT:

Please be sure to read and fully agree to all the Safety Rules in order to enroll in any Herdabout K-9 Academy class.

All classes must be paid for in advance. Cash is the only method of payment accepted.

Dogs must be on flat buckle, martingale or slip collars for these classes. Collars may be made of nylon, leather or chain. No head halters, body harnesses or prong collars will be permitted in class for safety reasons.

Please check the Safety Rules page for more Do's & Don'ts

Pre-Novice Obedience

This class is for GRADUATES of either

"The K9 to 5 Program" or "The Genesis Program".

This class is designed for those students who are interested in pursuing more in-depth obedience and control over their dogs, and those interested in the possibility of competing in obedience.

Everything needed to compete at the Pre-Novice level of obedience to earn a PCD (Pre-Companion Dog obedience title) will be taught in this class.

Manners, on leash heeling, and attention skills are sharpened up, as the true socialization of a dog is NOT the ability of a dog to play with every dog it meets (this is an unrealistic view) the true socialization of a dog is the dog's ability to see another dog, and simply ignore it.

Novice Obedience

This Class is for GRADUATES of the Pre-Novice Obedience class.

Off leash heeling with precision, stays, recalls, focus, attention and the ability of the dog to perform all commands with distractions is the goal of this class.

Everything needed to compete at the Novice level obedience to earn a CD (Companion Dog obedience title) will be taught in this class. While not everyone is interested in competition, the exercises are still fun to learn and are extremely helpful in real life situations.

Some tricks and games will be taught to keep the learning process fun.

Canine Good Neighbour (CGN)

This class is for GRADUATES of either

"The K9 to 5 Program" or "The Genesis Program".

This class will focus on training and preparing your dog for the 12 tests involved in taking the CKC's CGN exam. These skills will help you develop a well mannered, confident and controlled dog.

The actual CGN exam is separate from this class as the testing event is in the same format as a CKC sanctioned Obedience trial. Even if you never plan on taking the final exam, the exercises are applicable to everyday situations.

The basic format of the 12 exercises is very similar to the Therapeutic Paws test and a great way to prepare your dog for therapy work. Look here for more information on CGN Testing.

Specialty Classes  These classes are not regularly scheduled and are only available upon request to a minimum of four students per class.

Open Level Obedience

For GRADUATES of Novice Obedience.

You and your dog will learn all the exercises used in the Open Level of Obedience in order to compete and earn EDlaX (Companion Dog Excellent) obedience title.

Off leash heeling and stand for examination, Drop on recall, the broad jump, the 3 minute Sit/Stay and 5 minute Down/Stay with handler out of site. Special focus will be on retrieving and holding a Dumbbell, both on the flat and over the Panel Jump.

Obedience Trial Preparation

 For GRADUATES of Novice Obedience.

Students who would like to go on and compete in obedience will find this class helpful to proof their dog and learn some extra skills that are necessary to earn a qualifying score and maybe even a High in Trial!!

Each class is run exactly like a real obedience trial, with armband numbers, score sheets, etc. but with the intervention of pointers and corrections from the "judge" of these mock trials.

Private Obedience and Behavior Issue Training

Cost of each 6 lesson program is $360.00 including HST
(six weekly 50 minute lessons that build on each other)

Private lessons are designed to help dog owners focus on personal dog issues and areas of difficulty. If your dog cannot focus in a group setting or if the owner's schedule does not work with our days/times of our group classes, then private lessons are a great option.

Private obedience classes are 6 weeks in length and each lesson is between 50 minutes and one hour in length. Each week will have owners learning new skills and how some fun training games can teach their dog compliance to commands while owners are developing a better control over these problem areas. There will be homework each week as each class builds on the previous week's lessons.

The One-on-One Program

** Contact us to set up an appointment

For those who cannot fit into a group situation (for what ever reason) we offer this private obedience program that follows the same foundation training as in the Genesis Program.

It is a quick start to getting your dog or puppy on the right track for obedience, good manners and circumventing problem issues.

Stop Pulling, and Come When Called private lessons are 3 weeks in length (three 1 hour lessons that build on each other) and cost $159.30 plus HST

Stop Pulling!!

** Contact us to set up an appointment

Do you take your dog for a walk, under control and on your left hand side, or does your dog take you for a drag?

Come and understand why "modern" training devices are merely bandage solutions and how to really train your dog to walk politely on leash through crowds and all sorts of distractions without yanking you off your feet, or turning you into a toboggan.

Come When Called!!

** Contact us to set up an appointment

Have you accidently taught your dog that "COME HERE" means "run away and I will chase you"?

Do you want to have a dog that responds 100% to your recall command?

Then come and join us for this fun class that will teach owners how to train their dogs properly to come when called, no matter what is going on around them.

Homework will be given each week and each lesson builds on the previous week's exercises.

The instructor reserves the right to refuse and excuse anyone from lessons at any time.

Please check the Schedule to find out when our next group of Obedience Classes start at  Herdabout K-9 Academy.
